qallunaq queerimi takuaa (seen by a queer outsider), 2024

These pictures have been taken during an Artist in Residency (mainly in Ilulissat and Qeqertarsuaq) in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) between January and March 2024.

I have entered this country as an outsider and guest on native land -
a qallunaq, non-Inuit. Qallunat (plis a cultural term often referring to mainstream Euro- American culture, mostly white people (or in Greenland more specifically Danish people); though I am mixed-race and queer, trying to navigate outside of the Western, heteronormative/male gaze which makes me the outsider in the worlds I live in. Thus I am creating yet another space and referencing Pia Arke (an Inuit-Danish Artist) taking pictures from a 'third position'.

In my work I am trying to build bridges and make space for learning and unlearning. I am interested in reframing narratives, giving room to indigenous perspectives and a queerer point of view. Exploring is key to my practise and serves an attempt towards a more differentiated view, bypassing hierarchies and initiating further debate.
